When Lost Souls shared their instructional video How To Write A Breakdown, it went viral instantly, racking up 17 million views across social media, and spurred the creation of their new single, “My Soldiers Rage”, out today (Independent).
Metalcore bands are defined by the quality of their breakdowns. A good one will cause absolute carnage in the pit; a bad one will languish in the deepest recesses of the internet. A fact that Lost Souls know all too well given it’s their weapon of choice to save the world. When the band dropped a video of themselves writing a breakdown out of the sound of a ping pong ball bouncing off an amp, it not only inspired a few veterans of the genre but also was the spark for their new single “My Soldiers Rage”.
Lost Souls’ third offering is a delectable buffet of crushing riffs, soaring choruses and that chugging breakdown. Thematically, “My Soldiers Rage” sees the band expand their scope after concluding their very own Star Wars saga that informed their first two singles. Vocalist Kev explains: “so our drummer Yosh has this idea to film this video where we make a breakdown out of the sound of a ping pong ball bouncing…. Anyway I threw the ball and we hit this killer breakdown. Next minute the videos got like 17 million views and yeah, cool, the band gets heaps of traction online or whatever but like you’d think out of 17 million people a few would be like ‘good throw, Kev’.”
“Anyway, we wrote a song around it,” he continues. “This song is about one of my all time heroes Erwin Smith from Attack On Titan. If you’ve seen it, you’ll know instantly what it’s about by the song title. Attack On Titan is my favourite story in the last couple of decades, its ability to portray right or wrong being in the eye of the beholder is incredible and this track felt like it had the energy to pay homage.”
Lost Souls are the name you need to know in 2024. The five-piece metalcore outfit has been charged with the heavy burden of being Earth’s greatest musical achievement while also being its saviour. Their huge riffs, hypnotic hooks and unforgiving lyrics make them a force to be reckoned with.
