Eora/Sydney-based alt-rock band Live Like Animals have just unveiled their debut record ‘Modern State Of Mind‘ – produced by Brad Telfer (Reliqa) and mixed/mastered by Chris Blancato (Northlane).
‘Modern State Of Mind’ is a 10-track compilation that masterfully combines elements of alternative pop-rock, electronic and punk. The album’s intricate arrangement features boundary-defying echoes and emotive crescendoes, touching on themes of mental health with lyricism that crafts a unique perspective on the human condition.
Live Like Animals talks about the inspiration behind ‘Modern State Of Mind’:
“‘Modern State Of Mind’ is about six different rooms of the mind. Visually, the concept centres around the mind being like an multi levelled office suite with the first track, ‘Modern State of Mind’ being like the elevator music as you take it up to the different songs, the different states of mind, if you will.”
‘Modern State of Mind’ unfolds with ambient synths, seamlessly blending into robotic and soothing cascades of layered vocals. Harmonic sounds steadily intensify as the melody intertwines with the rising arrangement. Dynamic drums charge into both ‘The White Room‘ and ‘Bleach‘, driven by growling bass lines and soaring vocal cries.
‘when time stood still‘ begins with nostalgic sound recordings, merging with an undercurrent of eerie pads that morph into filtered melodic chops. Drawing on alternative electro/pop influences, chaotic rhythmic hits transition into ‘Bloom‘, providing moments of solitude before an emotive delivery by lead singer Nicholas Roy.
At the core, ‘I’ve Seen This Before‘ incorporates acoustic piano sounds, reverb-laden guitars, and euphoric instrumentation, steadily building momentum. ‘in hexagonal space‘ shares warm qualities but returns to an eerie and mystic energy fuelled by a guttural sub-bass and a marching pulse.
‘Everything Is Changing‘ and ‘rent an escape‘ showcase spiralling melodies, each uniquely embracing electronic vocal manipulation, intricate rhythm orchestration, and shimmering synths. ‘Fake Smiles‘ concludes, encapsulating the pervasive sense of urgency that undertones this genre-blurring record.
To celebrate the release, the band will touring across NSW, ACT and VIC, supporting RinRin and The Last Martyr. The band have continuously played to capacity crowds since their formation and supported the likes of RedHook, RinRin, Reliqa and sold–out their previous headline shows.
Singles off the record have also received widespread blog support from Spaceuntravel, HEAVY Magazine, Australian Music Scene, Everyday Metal, MILKY and Eat This Music. They’ve also received extensive radio love from Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, RTR FM, Edge Radio and Southern FM.
