Dion from the D4’s Top Five!

The D4 are storming the East Coast — louder, wilder, and more combustible than ever! With the FIRST EVER VINYL pressing of sophomore album ‘Out Of My Head’ dropping February 7, 2025, NZ’s finest punk n’ rollers will be hitting Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne in the company of some of Australia’s most beloved rockin’ outfits early 2025.

The D4 are running hot from a riotous, untamed tour across their spiritual stomping ground of Japan, and are now primed to explode back onto the Australian stage.

RETURN OF THE D4 – Dion Lunadon From The Infamous NZ Rock n’ Roll Band The D4 picks his Top Five Australian Records Ahead of the bands Australian Tour

The D4 Return for their First Australian Tour in Over 20 years, celebrating the first ever vinyl pressing of ‘Out Of My Head’. We sat down with Bassist/Vocalist Dion Lunadon to talk us through his all-time favourite Aussie records.

The Saints – Stranded

An all killer, no filler album that is probably somewhere in my top 3 punk albums of this era. Chris Bailey is one of the coolest sounding singers of any genre and Ed Kueppers guitar playing is absolutely scorching. Check the solos in ‘Erotic Neurotic’. The guitar playing on this record was hugely influential on me. Then you’ve got songs like ‘Messin’ With the Kid’ that capture a pensive, sitting in the afternoon sun vibe.

X – X-Aspirations

A really cool sounding record produced by Lobby Loyde. Guitars have got that discordant sound which I love. Kind of, like. early Misfits ‘Static Age’ era. Really captured that in the red/musicianship be damned energy on this record. I saw a show they played in the early 2000’s. As usual with these reunion shows I went in trepidatious. I came out more of a fan.

AC/DC – Powerage

There’s a bunch of AC/DC records that could be on this list. ‘Riff Raff’, ‘Sin City’ and ‘Kicked In The Teeth’ are the ones that pushed this particular record to make this list. Riff Raff has such a great guitar riff and is a lot of fun to play.

When we put The D4 together a lot of AC/DC was being listened to. We got to record a cover of ‘High Voltage’ with Rob Younger producing which was a great memory.

The Easybeats – Good Times (Single)

In my opinion the best party song of the era out doing the Stones for party song of the decade.

Steve Marriott’s backing vocals putting it over the edge. My introduction to this song was the Jimmy Barnes/Inxs version. Always in my stash when I DJ. Other cool versions are ‘Shocking Blue’ and ‘The Clingers’ (Produced by Kim Fowley). None as good as The Easybeats.

The Victims – Television Addict (Single)

Up there as one of the greatest Australian (or anywhere) punk singles of all time. Another 45 that’s always in my ‘favourite to DJ’ pile. I’ve noticed it’s in a lot of people’s favourites to DJ pile here in NYC. What more can I say?? Nothing more…
