Boston Manor – Sundiver [Album Review]

Review: Luke Petty

Sundiver is the follow-up to Boston Manor’s 2022 album, Datura. It’s like the second part of a story, but this time it’s a bit happier and more upbeat. 11 epic tracks, and they’re all cool and poetic. Sometimes, simple is best, Sundiver, is like that. It’s got a cool, chill vibe, but there’s also some energy from their older stuff. It’s straightforward, but it’s still awesome.

The transition from the experimental, lingering dusk of Datura into a full and extroverted dawn happens through the continuation of birdsong heard in the former’s closing track “Inertia”. “Datura (Dawn)” opens Sundiver with the same early morning sounds before peacefully asking “Could you please open that window, let the new world in”, masterfully introducing the themes of rebirth and optimism.

The singles ‘Container’ and ‘Sliding Doors‘ are a great example of Boston Manor’s songwriting. The verses are quiet and introspective, while the choruses are loud and energetic, with catchy hooks that will get stuck in your head. ‘Sliding Doors’ is especially intense, with a screamed pre-chorus and a breakdown that will blow you away. ‘HEAT ME UP’ is another song that uses this contrast between soft and loud, and it features some of the most emotional vocals on the album.

Why I Sleep’ and ‘Fornix,’ are a real highlight. These songs are heavier and darker than the others, with gritty guitars from the master Mike Cunniff and a powerful bassline that drives the music forward. ‘Fornix’ is one of the best songs on the album, with its constant energy and soaring vocal melodies.

It’s simple, but it’s beautiful. Boston Manor is doing what they do best, and it’s just so satisfying to listen to.

Instrumental track ‘Morning Star‘ is a nice change of pace from the more introspective ‘Shelter from the Rain‘ on Datura. It’s a more energetic moment of reflection, reminding us that even in the happiest times, life can be complex.

This theme continues with the slow, repetitive rock song ‘What Is Taken, Will Never Be Lost.’ This track adds depth and context to the album, making the final song, ‘DC Mini,’ even more powerful.

‘DC Mini’ is the strongest and most exciting song on the album. It features a guest vocal from Debbie Gough of Heriot, and it’s full of energy and emotion. The song ends with the intriguing lyric ‘it resets and starts again,’ which is a perfect way to conclude the album and the story.

Sundiver feels like the work of a band that knows exactly who they are and loves making music together. It’s a bright and thoughtful album that shows just how much Boston Manor has grown and evolved.
