Review: Luke Petty
Alright, so Yours Truly just dropped a bomb with their new album, Toxic. It’s a total rollercoaster of emotions, and honestly, it’s a big step up from their last stuff. They’ve ditched the sunshine pop-punk vibes for something way darker and grittier. It’s like they’ve peeled back all the layers and laid their hearts on the line. Releasing August 16th fans are in for a treat and are going to be pumping this one over and over.
Kicking off with “Back 2 U,” it’s like a blast from the past but with a modern twist. That chorus is so catchy, you’ll be humming it all day. The song kicks off with a catchy guitar riff that immediately grabs your attention, setting the stage for a high-energy and infectious chorus.
“Sour,” is a raw and relentless assault on the senses. The band’s signature energy is still there, but it’s been harnessed into something more ferocious, more real. Mikaila Delgado’s vocals have undergone a striking transformation. Her voice, once bright and effervescent, now carries a weight and depth that’s both haunting and compelling. She’s totally transformed and it’s awesome.
Yours Truly’s “California Sober” is a breath of fresh air in a genre often dominated by clichés. The track tackles the complex issue of mental health and substance use with a raw honesty that’s both refreshing and relatable. Delgado’s delivery is powerful yet vulnerable, capturing the essence of someone grappling with personal struggles. The music perfectly complements the lyrics, with a driving rhythm that builds to anthemic choruses.
There’s also this really pretty ballad called “Love Feels Like” that’s a nice break from all the heavy stuff. Mikaila’s voice is like butter on this one. “Love Feels Like” is a tender ballad, a gentle oasis in a dry desert. Delgao’s vocals are pure and extremely powerful making this song incredibly powerful.
Yours Truly’s “Sinking” is a raw and vulnerable dive into the depths of despair. The song’s instrumentation mirrors the lyrical content, creating a soundscape that is both suffocating and cathartic. The heavy guitar riffs and pounding drums contribute to the overall sense of desperation, while the melodic undertones offer a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness. Featuring up and coming legends Bloom. Jono Hawkey providing his masterful screams during the chorus adds a touch of class to this single. Definitely my favourite of the album.
Closing out the album “Call My Name” blending their classic pop-punk roots with contemporary elements. The track is a catchy and energetic anthem. Delgado’s vocals shine as she delivers powerful and relatable lyrics about the allure and danger of a destructive connection. The song’s driving rhythm and infectious chorus make it instantly memorable, while the underlying emotional depth adds layers of complexity. “Call My Name” showcases Yours Truly’s ability to evolve while staying true to their core sound. It’s a confident and assertive track that solidifies their position as one of the leading bands in the pop-punk scene.
Overall, Toxic is a bold and mature evolution for Yours Truly. It’s an album that demands attention and invites listeners to explore the depths of their own emotions. While it may not resonate with fans seeking the high-energy anthems of their debut, it’s a compelling listen for those who appreciate a more nuanced and introspective approach to rock music.
