An instant modern-day grunge classic, Sydney indie mavericks Dear Seattle return armed with an anthemic new single idc, out now via Domestic La La.
Packed with fuzzy guitars, nostalgic rock nods and catchy melodics for days, idc follows on from the quartet’s recent upbeat outing Nothing’s Stopping Me Now with lashings of heart and a criminally catchy chorus primed for group singalongs.
Produced by long-time Dear Seattle friend and producer Fletcher Matthews (Trophy Eyes, The Buoys, STUMPS), idc cuts a sharply fun figure, with the latest track ultimately starting life as a joke, springing to life at the end of an extensive writing session.
“idc started out as a joke,” shares guitarist and vocalist Brae Fisher. “Our producer Fletcher and I had spent a whole week writing a new song every day and I think we both went a bit loopy and needed to blow off some steam. I was actively trying to write the worst lyrics I could for the chorus, which is where the line “write a chorus rhyme it with nirvana came from”… and we were just laughing the whole session. Annoyingly the song itself and the melodies turned out to be sick and our whole team loved it, despite me not wanting to release it. The more I listened to it though, the more I realised how much I loved it and it’s message, namely that I need stop taking myself so seriously all the time, sometimes it’s nice to just be a dumb kid again.”
“Nowadays we’re constantly being polarised, judged and becoming more and more detached from each other in the process. It sucks. Life is tough. It gets expensive, it’s constantly demanding, and we’re surrounded by so much negativity that it’s hard to find the motivation to put on pants in the morning, so whatever you need to do to make it that little bit easier, just do it.”
With a distinctive Aussie tinge to their emotive and propulsive wares, Dear Seattle first emerged onto the scene back in 2013, releasing their debut EP Words Are Often Useless that same year. Following a second EP release, 2017’s self-titled Dear Seattle, the Northern Beaches-hailing group solidified their presence with their first ever full-length album Don’t Let Go in 2019, also securing the group a #10 spot on the ARIA Australian Album Charts.
Unleashing their powerful sophomore album Someday in 2022, Dear Seattle expanded their legacy to even greater heights, with Someday debuting at #4 on the ARIA Australian Album Charts, a Spotlight Album feature on triple j, and Rolling Stone declaring that “Dear Seattle is born again”.
Continuously honing their modern take on old school pop punk and indie rock over the years, Dear Seattle have previously performed alongside the likes of Hockey Dad, Trophy Eyes and Dune Rats, with multiple headline tours and appearances at Splendour In The Grass, UNIFY Gathering, Party In The Paddock and more in their wake.
Whether charming Missy Higgins herself with their 2019 triple j Like A Version cover of The Special Two, launching their own beer, burning up the charts and airwaves, or penning melodic, heartfelt delights that’ll have you equally singing along and banging your head, Dear Seattle are a band who build unforgettable moments around authenticity and charming execution, and 2023 has vividly sown the seeds for the band’s exciting new chapter.
Dear Seattle recently hit the road joining Hockey Dad and Ruby Fields for the Hockey Fields Tour, and also completed their own headline run in August to celebrate the release of their previous 2023 single Nothing’s Stopping Me Now.
