Melbourne chaotic alt metal outfit The Last Martyr share angry new single Burn It Down and prepare to launch it live at headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne later this month.
Targeting the tyrannical systems that control our society, Burn It Down is an aggressive outpour of emotional catharsis. “Burn It Down is about wishing we could press reset on the world and start again,” explains vocalist Monica Strut. “It touches upon the control of women’s bodies and the governing of other marginalised groups – wishing we could burn down all the oppressive systems humans have created over the years.”
Produced mixed and mastered with Chris Lalic (Windwaker, Days Like These), The Last Martyr lean into darker territory on Burn It Down, mirroring the lyrical content. “The music is so apocalyptic and dark and I wanted to convey anger, power and a touch of sarcasm in the lyrics and vocal delivery. I think the combination comes across as pretty unhinged but given the subject matter, I think that’s fair enough!”
The Last Martyr will share their new single live, alongside more unreleased material, at two headline shows this November at Melbourne’s Bergy Band Room on the 10th and Sydney’s Burdekin Hotel on the 18th. They have also announced they’ll headline the inaugural all ages Sanctuary Festival in Frankston on December 9. Tickets on sale now.
The Last Martyr is Monica Strut (vocals), Ben Rogers (guitar), Ricky Andres (bass) and Vin Krishnan (drums). The fierce four piece have jumped from strength-to-strength since first unleashing their unique brand of metalcore, nu-metal and electro-fused dark rock. Their 2021 single Hindsight saw the band earn triple j rotation and Unearthed feature artist before rounding the year out with triple j’s Lochlan Watt selecting the tune as his favourite track uploaded to Unearthed that year.
Their 2021 EP, ‘Purgatory‘, once again produced with long term collaborator Lalic, was met with critical acclaim, seeing NME Australia declare, “This five-track project is filled with gut-punch riffs, powerful vocals and propulsive blast beats,” and Hysteria Magazine gushing, “It doesn’t get more epic than Purgatory”.
2022 saw the release of single Sugar, a sweet and riotous tune the quartet took across the country on tour with hard rock heavyweights, Black Veil Brides (USA), nu-metal icons Sunk Loto and on shows with Dayseeker (USA), Paledusk (JPN) and The Getaway Plan.
The last 18 months have seen The Last Martyr appear twice at Unify as well as at Halloween Hysteria Festival, BIGSOUND Festival, Froth & Fury Fest, and support Story Of The Year (USA) on their Melbourne and Sydney Knotfest sideshows in March.
