Teenage Joans Release Brand New Single ‘5 Things I Can Taste’

Adelaide indie rock duo Teenage Joans pump up the jam with their brand new single 5 Things I Can Taste out today.

Loaded with glossy bounce and a karaoke-ready chorus, the track comes hot on the heels of previous single Candy Apple which accompanied the announcement of the duo’s debut album The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest, due out on Friday 13 October via Domestic La La.

Propulsive, catchy and with some punk-stained bite lining its pop-soaked core, 5 Things I Can Taste was one of the final tracks conjured for The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest, with a clever lyrical structure for the eagle-eared that accompanies the single’s ode to an anxiety grounding technique.

5 Things I Can Taste was the last song we wrote for the album,” shares the band of their latest single. “When we were looking for the missing piece, we realised we wanted to write a fast-paced, almost punk song to top off the album. The lyric structure is pretty interesting too – each line starts with the last word of the line before it. As “counting 5 things you can see” is a mechanism to help ground yourself when experiencing anxiety, we wanted the lyrics to feel sporadic and chaotic, kind of how anxious thoughts feel.”

Equally inspired by the golden era of punk a la Blink-182 and Paramore as much as they are by fellow modern Aussies WaaxCamp Cope and Tired LionTeenage Joans take their whimsical yet hard-hitting nostalgia to even greater heights as they approach the release of their debut full length The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest.

Embracing darkness, vulnerability and authenticity with more vigor than ever before, the duo’s debut album is definitely not the release most will expect. Never ones to do things “by the book”, The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest proudly swells between pop punk anthems, mosh pit-ready breakdowns and future karaoke classics; all while remaining searingly relatable and showcasing every inch of the Teenage Joans sonic psyche that has galvanized throughout the pair’s storied career.

Teaming up with producer Jarred Nettle and drawing inspiration from the likes of 5 Seconds Of Summer and Camp CopeTeenage Joans honor their past will gazing firmly forward throughout The Rot That Grows Inside My ChestWith 13 tracks lying in wait, balanced with tracks that cohesively thread while straddling light, shade and everything in between, The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest dazzles in its dichotomies, from the soaring softness of Moneymoneymoney to the pulsating 5 Things I Can Taste.

Forming in 2018 as literal teenagers, Teenage Joans, aka Cahli Blakers and Tahlia Borg, would go on to nab the triple j Unearthed High crown in 2020 while also insatiably charming audiences around the country over the years with their self-professed “juice-box punk-pop” sonic stylings. Having previously shared stages with the likes of Amy SharkViolent SohoBall Park MusicThe Chats and many more, the duo have also continued to establish themselves as firm festival faves, with appearances at Spin Off, Yours & Ours, UNIFY Gathering and beyond.

From their debut EP, 2021’s Taste Of Me which saw the group blitz through and win seven South Australian Music Awards, to their blazing 2022 single TerribleTeenage Joans have consistently woven musical magic via their indie-pop-punk collision packed full of fun and engaging finesse. And while 2022 closed out with a bang via a headline tour around the country, 2023 is already shaping up to be Teenage Joans‘ biggest and brightest yet, with recent appearances at Groovin The Moo alongside Alt-JAmy SharkBall Park Music and Nothing But Thieves, three SXSW showcases, and a headline appearance at Adelaide’s UNIFY Off The Record firmly under their belts.
