Review – Luke Petty
Ruckus! – just the album title alone hints at the stirring impact it’s going to make, and it certainly lives up to that expectation. This third studio album by Movements, set to release on August 18, 2023, through the incredible Fearless Records, marks a departure from their previous post-hardcore/emo style. Ruckus! showcases a more diverse sound, blending elements of Pop, Punk, and even Ska. This evolution is evident in tracks like “Fail You,” with its infectious pop punk chorus, and “Lead Pipe,” featuring an inspired Ska breakdown.
While the sound may have changed, Movements’ signature emotional intensity remains intact in Ruckus!. The album explores themes of loss, regret and self-doubt, with Miranda’s raw and powerful vocals delivering lyrics that resonate with vulnerability, captivating the listener. This is most evident in the standout single “Tightrope.”
The album sets off with a captivating opener, “You’re One of Us Now,” as the tension builds gradually with the inclusion of a children’s choir, creating an atmosphere that intensifies until Miranda’s vocals take the stage. This exceptional opening track is bound to strike a chord with Movements’ fans, offering a beautifully crafted and atmospheric experience.
“Killing Time” follows, a dark and atmospheric track capturing the feeling of being trapped in a stagnant routine. With its driving guitar riff and haunting vocal melody that is quite catchy, the song strikes a chord with listeners. Transitioning to a more upbeat vibe, “Lead Pipe” proves to be an addictively catchy anthem about overcoming challenges and discovering inner strength, highlighted by the Ska-inspired breakdown. However, it’s “Tightrope” that truly shines on this album, embodying the power of love and loss. It evokes a sense of emotional unease, resonating deeply with those who have experienced the precariousness of balancing their emotions. Undoubtedly, it’s an instant hit and one of the standout tracks from this Californian four-piece.
“I Hope You Choke” takes a different approach, channelling anger and exploring darker emotions. The inclusion of a children’s choir repeatedly singing the titular line creates a jarring and unsettling effect, although some might describe it as hauntingly beautiful. The other tracks from the 10 track album all follow suit and make this such a great listen.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this album, with “Tightrope” standing out as the highlight. Its impact ensures it will be on repeat for me for quite some time. I highly recommend Ruckus! not only to existing fans of Movements but also to those who appreciate alternative rock and pop punk. We eagerly anticipate what the future holds for this band. Check it out in August 18.
