FUTURE STATIC SHARE ASTOUNDING COVER OF REGGAETON CLASSIC ‘GASOLINA’

Naarm/Melbourne-based alternative-heavy act Future Static have just unleashed their take on Daddy Yankee‘s global hit, ‘Gasolina‘.

Front-woman Amariah Cook unites the vastly different worlds of metal and reggaeton on a song that speaks to her childhood in Barcelona, Spain. She explains, “It all started with an impromptu message from our guitarist, Ryan Qualizza when he sent a link across reading ‘DaDY_y_YanKy_GASOLINA_x_ FutUreSTatIC_BESTVERSION.exe.wav’. Having grown up in Barcelona, I loved the idea of reinventing a song that was so present in my upbringing. Over there, the metalheads hate reggaeton, so bringing those two mortal enemies together was an entertaining idea for me. I’ve always had a part in my soul that wanted to try to merge these two socially and musically opposing groups together”. 

Amariah further reflects, “Apart from it connecting me to my Spanish roots, doing this cover also meant blending all of our lives together. Even though we were all raised in such vastly different lifestyles and places. It is one of those songs which was extremely popular all over the world, and with this cover, we strive to bring back that sense of planetary community.”

‘Gasolina’ is a sucker punch of cacophonous riffs, ferocious drums and raging vocals, mixed and mastered by Sam Bianco (Tapestry, Cherry). Amariah presides over the track, creating a venomous, chaotic take on the reggaeton worldwide smash. The unforgiving arrangement transforms ‘Gasolina’ into a concoction of woozy and fiery breakdowns, blaring and ruthless guitars, with a signature metal grit.

Accompanying the song is the adrenaline-filled music video directed by Colin Jeffs (Make Them Suffer, Alpha Wolf). Filmed in a variety of locations including Fabrik Studio and a secret street location for the vehicle stunt work, the clip features dynamic camera shots, fish eye lenses and vivid animation. The video is dripping with attitude as it combines unhinged and seductive scenes with thrilling motor acrobatics.

Colin explains, “I am always about doing cool, hype clips that turn heads and I felt like this song was the perfect tune to do a head-turner to. We tried to pay homage to the original video, with it being sexy and fun. We tried to modernise that and add our own flavour and flair to it. I think we did an excellent job of reimagining the song, whilst still keeping a lot of the flavour of what it was like back in the day.”

‘Gasolina’ featured on ‘The Better Sessions – Volume 2‘ – released November 19, 2022, a charity vinyl release which is collaborated between the What We Do On The Weekend Podcast and Anti Vinyl Vinyl Club, with all profits being donated to Beyond Blue. Purchase HERE.

Off the back of being selected as a triple j Unearthed Feature Artist in 2021, the band won their UNIFY Gathering competition, opening the festival in 2022. They’ve also performed at festivals such as UNIFY – Off The Record (2023), ‘Knight and Day‘, Alpha Wolf‘s CVLTFEST and BIGSOUND, and shared the stage with notable heavy acts Jinjer (UKR), Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows (USA), Casey (UK), RedHook, Caligula‘s Horse, Windwaker, Circles and Bloom, as well as supporting Eurovision alumni Voyager. The group will be venturing to Europe and the UK for the first time in September and October 2023, including appearances at prestigious German tastemaker festivals Reeperbahn and Euroblast.

Previous singles have seen substantial support from Spotify, Apple Music, triple j, Double J, Triple M Hard N Heavy, Distorted Sound (UK), New Noise Magazine (USA), MANIACS, Hysteria Magazine, Music Feeds, HEAVY Mag and Wall Of Sound. They’ve also been featured as Kerrang! Radio Feature Artist Of The Week (UK), and had music videos added to rotation on ABC‘s rage.
