Eora/Sydney-based alt-rock force RedHook have today announced their long-anticipated debut album ‘Postcard From A Living Hell‘, alongside the release of brand new single ‘Soju‘, a huge festival-ready bop featuring Boorloo/Perth indie-rock favourites Sly Withers.
Produced by Stevie Knight (Stand Atlantic, Yours Truly) and mixed by James Paul Wisner (Underoath, Paramore), ‘Soju’ is a saxophone-inflected pop-punk anthem, which features guest vocals from Sly Withers’ frontman Jono Mata and a final chorus performed live by hundreds of RedHook fans, recorded at the band’s 2022 regional headliner in Yerrowah/Shellharbour, NSW.
Singer Emmy Mack explains the inspiration behind the track:
“I wrote ‘Soju’ about the perils of being a ‘people pleaser’ and the feelings of frustration and resentment that can boil up when you don’t set healthy boundaries, and allow more assertive personalities to push you around. It’s a ‘fuck you’ song, but it’s also simultaneously a ‘fuck me’ song because at the end of the day, it’s up to each of us to prioritise our own needs and not compromise our values to keep the peace. Some people like me just struggle with it a bit harder than others.”
‘Soju’ will feature on RedHook’s debut album ‘Postcard From A Living Hell’, which is slated for release on April 21, 2023. Previous singles ‘SAY‘ and ‘Jabberwocky‘ are also included on the forthcoming LP. Emmy comments: “It’s been a long time coming but we’re so ridiculously excited to finally announce our debut album! This is something we’ve done purely for our fans. We have so much epic new music on the way that traverses the full spectrum of RedHook’s colourful sonic universe and we can’t wait for it to smash you in the earholes.”
Both previous releases were added to high rotation on triple j, and also received immense support from the likes of Spotify, Apple Music, triple j Unearthed, BBC Radio 1 (UK), Kerrang! Radio (UK), Rock Sound (UK), NME, HEAVY Mag and Wall of Sound. The music videos for each track were added to ABC‘s rage.
RedHook will support the release of ‘Soju’ with performances at the juggernaut Good Things festival in Eora/Sydney, Naarm/Melbourne, and Meanjin/Brisbane alongside the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, The Amity Affliction and Polaris, as well as a sold out show supporting Stand Atlantic at Eora/Sydney’s Crowbar, and a slot at Rolling Sets festival in Darkinjung/Central Coast alongside Hilltop Hoods, Peach PRC and Alex Lahey this December.
This follows on from a meteoric year that saw RedHook complete their biggest ever national headline tour, as well as a 28-date regional Australian tour as main support for metalcore titans In Hearts Wake. The band also made their critically acclaimed debuts at Australia’s Groovin The Moo and UNIFY Gathering festivals, and two of the biggest heavy music festivals on the planet, Germany’s Rock am Ring and Rock im Park; a feat few Australian bands can claim.
